On the Verge of History

Drake Maye has the Norsemen a win away from the most wins in league history
Published: Dec 03, 2025

In the 34 year history of the WMFFL no team has ever won 13 games in a single regular season.  Two teams Have come close and only lost one game. In 1996 The Crusaders went 12-1.  But that season there were byes and they only played thirteen games so they didn't get a chance to try for a 13th win.  In 2016 the MeggaMen went into the final game with a 12-1 record. But the Sacks made a great stand and forced a tie. Those are the two best records ever played. Another team, the 2003 War Eagles also only lost one game, but tied two others.  Eight other teams have gone 12-2.

The Norsemen are heading the final week at a 12-1 record. They're taking on Omar's Coming, who just last week picked up only their second win of the season, avoiding their own possible historic mark.  It gives the Norsemen a chance to do something that's never been done before.  But are they really historically great?

The '96 Crusaders won sixteen consecutive regular season games over two seasons.  The '16 MeggaMen are probably the best team ever since.  (Don't tell Tom I said that)  This year's Norsemen have a luck rating that indicates they have about 3 1/2 more wins than they should.  They have a power rating that while it does lead the league, at 103 is not exactly historically great.

But but as we all know, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Also, for what it's worth, both that Crusaders and MeggaMen teams lost in the playoffs and didn't take home the championship.

For the rest of the playoff field, things have certainly fallen into place.  The Gold Division gets a championship game, the Amish Electricians meet the Gallic Warriors, the winner wins the division, the loser is eliminated.  The Amish will win the division if there's a tie.  The Crusaders have been eliminated from the division title, but still have an opportunity to get in the playoffs with a wild card. They'll be in with a win and a Richard Lionheart's loss.  But if the Crusaders lose or tie, or if Richard wins or ties, then Richard grabs the final wildcard.

The Toilet Bowl spots are pretty straightforward as well. The British Bulldogs get the spot with a loss or a tie, or if Ain't Nothing But a Jew Thing, wins or ties.  But if the Bulldogs win and the Jews lose, then the Trump Molest Collies would be in if they also lose.  But if they do win, then Ain't Nothing But a Jew Thing will be headed to the Toilet Bowl a year after winning the championship.

With every game having some meaning, the last week should be interesting.
